Fox FAQs

Whether you are a returning family or new to our school, students and their families will find answers to many of the questions that are top of mind as the first day of school approaches. We have also included instructions on how to find more detailed information about each topic on the Fox Elementary School website. You will also receive more information and be able to ask questions at Back to School Night.


What is Back to School Night?

Back to School Night is an opportunity for parents to meet their child(ren)’s teacher and find out about curriculum, classroom procedures, volunteer opportunities and more. Back to School Night for incoming Kindergarten families will be held on Monday August 20, 2018 at 6pm. Back to School Night for 1st - 5th grade families will be held on Thursday August 23, 2018 at 6:30pm. Check the Fox Elementary School website homepage for details closer to those dates.


What do I need to do before school starts?  Are there forms to fill out?

Enrollment is run by the school district, not Fox School. The Belmont Redwood Shores School District will send an email with a link to the annual online registration form in early August.  If you have more than one child in the district, you will receive a separate email for each one. How do I find out who is in my child’s class?  Can I get in touch with other parents?

You will receive an email from the district with your child’s class/teacher assignment.  You will be able to refer to the Fox Family Directory for a list of the students in each class.  Access to contact information for other Fox parents, Fox staff, and PTA officers can also be found in the directory. How can I contact my child’s teacher?

Communication between parents and teachers is critical to student success.  Your child’s teacher will review the best times and methods to get in touch during Back to School Night.  In addition, all Fox teachers have an email address which may be found in the Fox Directory or on the Fox Website.  For more information go to: Fox website—"Teachers" tab—Fox Staff or

What time does school start? End?

School starts at 8:25am for all students. On regular school days, Kindergartners are dismissed at 1:30 pm,  1st through 3rd graders are dismissed at 2:35pm, 4th and 5th graders are dismissed at 3:10pm. What is a minimum day?

Every Wednesday is a minimum day, and children are dismissed early to allow for teachers to plan and collaborate.  There are other minimum days throughout the year for parent-teacher conferences. For more information go to: BRSSD Calendar or Fox  Home Page—This Week At Fox. 


What is the safest route to walk to school?

Fox is committed to ensuring the safety of all its students and has developed a Safe Routes plan for the school.  All Families are asked to review the Safe Routes flyer and follow the guidelines for walking to school as well as for school drop-off and pick up. Where does my child go on the first day? Should I accompany my child to the classroom?

Each grade and class has a designated spot to line up near the classroom.  Parents may walk their child to the door of the classroom. Your child’s teacher will provide further guidance. Kindergarten parents may want to ask for details at Back To School Night.


After the first day, how/where do I drop my child off? Where do I pick my child after school?

Drop-off and pick up time can be very congested, so please allow ample time and be patient. If you drop off before 8:15, you will encounter less traffic.  Please let your child know that they must go to the red lunch tables and wait until the 8:15 bell to play on the yard. What if my child is sick? Or late?  Or I need to pick him/her up early.

If your child is going to be absent or late, call the Fox Attendance line 650-620-2812. What if there is an emergency on campus (ex. fire, earthquake, etc)?

At Fox School, the safety of students is our primary objective. That is why we have a comprehensive Disaster Plan for responding to emergencies.  For more information go to: Fox Elementary School Home Page—Parents—Emergency Procedures or


What if my child forgets something (e.g. lunch, jacket, homework, etc.)

Bring the forgotten item to the office; do NOT go directly to the classroom. To minimize disruption to the classroom, the office will contact the teacher to reunite the student with the forgotten item.


Is there afterschool care?  How does my child get from the classroom to the afterschool site?

The on-campus afterschool provider is Curiosity Corner. Several other organizations will pick up children and take them to other sites.  These include: Footsteps Childcare and Stepping Stones both located at Barrett Community Center, plus Challenge School and Hanlin Academy. Kindergartners are met by the afterschool program representatives at the classroom and escorted to Curiosity Corner or the appropriate program van.  All other students will walk to Curiosity Corner or the program van.  For more information go to: Fox website—"Parents" tab--Curiosity Corner or


When are the school vacations?

What school supplies does my child need? Will they be needed on the first day?  What about a backpack?

It is helpful for your child to have a backpack on the first day of school.  All other supplies will be provided by the school which is primarily funded by donations from parents and others.  For more information go to: Fox website at


Should I send my child a snack?

Yes, each classroom has a snack break mid-morning and parents should send a healthy snack to help their child stay focused and able to learn. For more information about healthy snacks go to: Fox Elementary School Home Page ( —Our School—School Policies—Healthy Celebrations


What about lunch, can my child microwave food? Or have it done for him/her? Can my child purchase a lunch?

Students do not have access to a refrigerator or microwave, and staff and volunteers are unable to microwave food for students. Are there any food restrictions?

Although there are no specific restrictions, parents are encouraged to be aware of any food allergies in their child’s classroom.  Parents of children with food allergies should complete district forms and inform the child’s teacher on the first day of school. What if my child needs to take medicine at school?

Where can I find out about the curriculum?

How much homework will my child have?

Homework is an integral part of the educational process. In addition to 15-20 minutes of daily reading there are suggested timeframes for each grade level. For more information go to: Our School—School Polices—Homework Policy. Direct link:


Are there field trips?

Yes, all grades take one or more field trips during the year that support concepts learned in the classroom.  Parents are welcome, and essential, to help chaperone and transport children.  Your child’s teacher will talk about specific field trips being planned during Back to School Night. What resources are available for children with special needs?

Fox offers a number of specialists and enrichment programs to help each student achieve to his or her highest potential:

  • A variety of resource specialists and speech therapists for students with specific learning needs
  • A school improvement program aimed at increasing the performance of every student
  • Afterschool programs in academics and community service
  • Enrichment programs for students seeking a more challenging academic environment

Where can I find about behavior expectations and other school policies?

All students are expected to behave respectfully and follow the instructions of teachers, administrators and classroom volunteers at all times.  For more information on specific behavior expectations go to: Fox website—"Our School" tab—School Policies—Rules and Expectations for Student Behavior or


Can I volunteer in the classroom?  Or if I can’t volunteer during the day, are there other ways to contribute my time?

To volunteer in the classroom, contact your child’s room parent or teacher. Be sure you have completed the Volunteer Clearance Process.    If volunteering during the school day isn’t possible, the PTA has many volunteer opportunities that fit any schedule. Is there anything I need to do if I am visiting the campus to volunteer or participate in an event?

Yes, all visitors and volunteers are required to check in at the front office on each visit to sign the visitor log and obtain a pass or badge.


How can I contribute financially?  What is the difference between the PTA and SchoolForce?

Contributions to the Fox PTA and to SchoolForce support many programs and services for your your child(ren)’s benefit. SchoolForce funds personnel, such as music, library, science, and reading specialists. The PTA funds programs, such as assemblies, class materials and social events. How do I join the PTA?

You can join during the district’s registration process in August or via the Fox Store after the 2nd week of school.  PTA Membership ($10/ea or $15/family) allows you to vote on issues impacting our students, school, and families. How do I know what’s going on at school?

The Fox Weekly Update and PTA Newsletters communicate important news and events related to Fox School to help keep you informed about what is happening on campus—right in your email. Can we get Fox t-shirts or sweatshirts?
